Beach Weddings - Lots to Think About!

Even thinking about having a beach wedding makes you feel all warm and sunny...they even make you feel comfy! Just think of all those bare feet, casual clothing and low-key decorations. Maybe a few flowers strung up around a marquee and along the backs of deckchairs, a tiki or two hanging from a pole and some pretty, colored lanterns hanging from the surrounding palm trees. It's easy to think of a relaxing, laid-back atmosphere with everyone sipping Mai Tais in a beautiful, exotic location. Well, STOP RIGHT THERE. Beach weddings may evoke all those thoughts but in reality they need a lot of planning. If you have a local beach (or even lake) you know very well, you'll be one step ahead. Just make sure you know about local regulations, such as if you need permits and if that particular location is used by other community groups on a regular basis. You don't want your wedding party invaded by the annual ironman competition!

Also, as beach weddings are outdoor weddings, you're always going to have to take the weather into consideration. Just because it's a tropical paradise it doesn't mean it never rains. Do your research, and make sure you're not going to your 'ideal' exotic location in the middle of winter, or worse still, if it's hurricane season. Tropical locations in other countries and other hemispheres will have very different seasons to what you usually experience, so remember: research, research, research.

There are many other practical considerations to think of, such as which way you are planning to face when you're reciting your wedding vows. Sunset weddings are beautiful occasions, but make sure you're not staring directly into that setting sun or even worse still - your minister or celebrant isn't. You don't want him (or her) marrying the bride to the best man instead!

Put a lot of thought into your choice of wedding dress. If you plan to wed in a hot, tropical location don't choose man-made fabrics, look for a dress made from natural fibres so your skin can breath. Also keep in mind that you want a dress that isn't going to crease easily, and as the hem will no doubt get sand in it and possibly salt water, shorter hemlines would be more practical. If you choose not to go barefoot and want to wear shoes, tradtional wedding shoes won't cut it for the same reasons. Lovely strappy sandals will, however. If your hair is prone to go a little haywire in humid conditions (i.e. the dreaded frizzies), take that into consideration too when planning your hairstyle.

If you are planning on travelling to a far-off destination, make sure there is accommodation nearby for your guests. You don't want any last minute hickups with hire cars not turning up etc. If at all possible, try and get a location that's within walking distance of nearby hotels, or perhaps organise a shuttle bus for the day. Remember that if you're offering food the local insects will want their share too - so plan carefully. Perhaps serving the food inside a marquee which has mosquito netting over the doorways?

Anyway, these are just some thoughts on making your beach wedding everything you've ever dreamt it to be. It CAN be that idealised location I've written about in the first paragraph up above, as long as you do your planning and research. It's all what you make it to be - and I'm sure it's going to be the most beautiful and memorable day of your life. :-)

Steampunk Weddings

First of all apologies as this week's update is a little late! First of all there were hassles with my web host (hosting the www.the-elegant-wedding.com) and then the Easter Bunny arrived, with the holidays she brings (not to mention the Easter eggs!) however we're here to talk about weddings of course, so without further ado... This week I thought I'd write about the steampunk theme. What is steampunk? For those who don't know or have never heard of this theme before, think Victorian era meets science fiction...think Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Terry Pratchett, the latest incarnation of Sherlock Holmes in the movie theatres with Robert Downey Jr... It's Victorian dress crossed with technology and industrial machinery like steam trains and flying machines, lots of brass, copper and metal offset by velvet and lace - what a combo! And, it has a huge following. So, for couples out there who want a Steampunk-themed wedding, there are some great resources out there online...
Apologies but the host for our website is migrating servers and we're offline atm. Hopefully back soon! Have a great Easter everyone!

Indian Weddings

When I first sat down to write this blog update, my original idea was to write about Asian weddings, but while I was doing my research quickly discovered that the Asian wedding market is huge - too big, in fact, for one little blog update. Why is that? There are really no such things as 'Asian Weddings', because Asia is after all, a continent (well, with a few islands thrown in!) with several different cultures and traditions - not to mention several more cultures and traditions within each particular Asian country as well. So, for this week's update, we'll focus on the beautiful country of India, and will feature several more Asian-themed weddings from other Asian countries over the coming months. O.k. so to India. When I think of India I think of one word: color. India has to be the most colorful nation on earth. The magnificent Indian Color Festival otherwise known as Holi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holi is a tradition which will be celebrated from the 27th Marc...
